Am I crazy? Maybe. Would I do it again? Absolutely!

I am three full days removed from the absurdity of running 16.3 miles at various points around the clock and my legs are slowly beginning to forgive me.  It was tough love—and even though it hurt like hell during the process, our relationship is stronger now.  Since Saturday, I’ve had the opportunity on several occasions to describe the relay experience to friends and family and each time I’ve fallen short.  It’s like one of those you-had-to-there moments that isn’t funny or entertaining in the retelling, unless you are speaking to someone who was there.  So even though I can tell anyone who will listen about how I nearly died trying to keep up with Speedy Smurf, only my comrades of Van 2 will really understand the uphill (literally and figuratively) battle I was fighting.

It got me thinking…why is nearly everyone on Team Beer Run already planning on doing this crazy exercise again next year?  The answer, I believe, is answered in a question posed by George Eliot that I keep on my desk at work: What do we live for, if it is not to make life less difficult for each other?  Sure we don’t need to do it, but 183 miles is something tangible yet impossible to do nonstop without the help of a couple vanloads of friends.  And as much as it sucked, the shared feeling of accomplishment outweighed anything potentially negative.  I could have been attacked by a pack of hungry raccoons and probably still thought it was one of the best, craziest, most entertaining weekends of my life.  Of course I’d have to get some shots for distemper, but a day or two later I’d be laughing about the experience…and showing off the bite marks.

So, with that in mind, I’m offering up ten of my favorite, errr…most memorable, moments on the trail—in no particular order—with minimal description.  The members of Team Beer Run, and especially Van 2, will understand.  To anyone else reading this…sorry, you kinda had to be there.

1.      Man at the Avis Counter: “Are you all coworkers?”  Chach: “Ssuuuuurrre.”

2.      Checking my Blackberry every two minutes during the USC-Oregon State game, thinking there had to be something wrong with it.  (Go Beavers!)

3.      Getting my ass handed to me by one of those Ultra runners.

4.      My heels not touching the pavement for a quarter mile while trying to defend against nipple chafing.

5.      Ryan: “Hey Blake, want some blueberry crepes this morning?”  Blake: “Bluauauaha!!  You shut your whore mouth!”

6.      Getting my ass handed to me by a 12-year-old boy dressed like Marilyn Monroe.

7.      Driving to the last exchange point and having the manager of Dixie Liquor hand me her business card and tell me that, “We do kegs!”

8.      Mutant Mountain Gnats.

9.      Getting my ass handed to me by Usain Bolt posing as a white dude on an opposing team.

10.     Beating the Smurfs.

Run On, Beer Run…Run On.

The end

It's over. Due to the fact that I'm way too tired to properly put this
into typed words I'll make it short. It was an incredible experience
and one of the most challenging things I've ever done. Also, Chach
owned Papa Smurf and we ended up beating them on the last leg. Now to
go home to shower and rest to get ready for the after party!

Added a pic of the smurfs at the finish line. They were a worthy arch
nemesis.

Passing the smurfs...

In our van! Hopefully Chach is catching Papa Smurf

Sarah is d-u-n dun!

She also gained a few minutes on the dastardly smurfs. It should be a
very close finish! Stay tuned.

Almost done

Sarah is coming in to the exchange. Two more people to go. We should be getting to the finish by 2.

Halfway done with van 2

Ryan is pleased.

Van #1...

Finishing strong!!!!

As much as we run...

This view pretty much stays the same....
Whoohoo...
Here comes Hugh...
Almost done for Van #1.

A new day

The sun is shining. I'm feeling great after a healthy hour and a half of sleep.

I had the run of my life last night despite the monsoon. It was raining so hard I couldn't see 6 inches in front of me. After all the rain and shoes full of water, I must have looked unrecognizable because my sleep-deprived team totaly missed me running by (despite a brief conversation about how much the rain sucks.) Oh well at least I put some good distance between me and papa smurf.

We also had a scenic tour of the farm pastures of montgomery county last night (I.e. 5:30 this morning). We clipped a few branches and had to make a couple of three point turns on narrow country roads but made it fine to our overnight accomodations -- a parking lot. Not sure avis is going to want this van back.

Can't wait to get this party started. Should be seeing the finish line by 3 this afternoon.

Do we look ready or what?

DAYLIGHT is back...
And Beer Run is still running on...

Morning never smelled so bad.

I honestly have what feels like hugh chunks of time and no memory at all of what happened. Wow.

I ran my second leg at some point last night. Changed and got back in the van, then woke up in a park and couldn't really see anyone or feel my legs. Is that bad?

God gives us dry socks because he loves us and wants us to be happy.

My last leg is five miles pretty flat. Thank goodness.

Kelly has the giggles. We are all a bit crazy.

Wow.
SHD

25% done...

And counting...

Half of van 1 (Lisa, James, and Weaver) is DONE...whooohooo!!!

Adrienne is closing in...

And the sun is up....errr...sort of!!!

I just encountered a "local" with his Saturday AM coffee and friendly yellow lab in the passenger seat of his truck...didn't seem too happy that a bunch of city folk had invaded his "hood"...

Oh well...we'll be running on soon enough!!!

Sweet tap-dancing raptor Jesus

I just woke up and feel like smashed ass and buttered corn chips.
Three miles to go unless Ragnar decides to go three for three and give
me another very hard leg. :(

My Legs Feel Like They Have the Flu

I woke up this morning in the back seat of a van in a park. I don't know how I got here.  All I know is that there is another van close by with the name "Squirrels Gone Wild" and that my legs hate me and feel like they have the flu.  I can barely move them and I'm trying to figure out a way into tricking them into running another 4.4...or 4.2...whatever it is...miles.

I may need an ambulance before this is done.

RJK

5:48 am- and I am finished!

In shooting pain I finished my final leg at 5:48 am. Team Beer Run is on its way to being DONE!

lmh

You've been... Thunderstruck!

Well, it's 4:30 am on saturday and we're sitting in a van on the side
of the road in rural MD. It's pitch black, pouring rain, and there is
some impressive thunder and lightning action going on outside.

We're not complaining though. We're cracking jokes about how bad we
smell. Chach is currently obliterating his second leg and we're
getting ready to pull into our big exchange with van 1. This has been
another kickass set of legs for van 2, but I'm ready for a damn nap!

Van 1 better be ready to represent on their last legs!

My last leg

And I can barely walk as it is. Some serious pain here..... 430am and counting....

Lmh

SHOUtOUTs....

To the BEST volunteers on the course...

The Sisters McWright--JAMIE AND JULIE...

Whoohooohooohoooo...

PS it is 4:30am in Van #1...getting ready for our final legs...

Smurf update

It's neck in neck and their two best runners are done. We expect to
have a good lead by the end of these legs. Especially since Ryan just
finished his last leg with a 7:30 pace.

Don't let us down van 1!!!

What the hell?

So I got a surprise last second leg change to very hard!!! I deserve
a medal for doing that back to back. On a positive note, I crushed my
smurf counterpart. CRUSHED!!!

Blake out.

Seriously...

Blake is my hero.

Poor Blake

So after Subway and making it to the next major exchange we were finally able to get some sleep (sort of). Kelly in the back van seat, me in the next one, Blake in the next and Mary up front. Ryan and Chach set up a tent in front of the van. Who said we were unprepared?  After the van door slammed shut slash dome light came off and on about 100 times and after somebody peed on the tent it was time to get up again to meet Poppa Pate as he sprinted to the finish. Blake is running again so Van 2 is starting Leg 2. Blake thought he was doing 4.7 but it is actually 5.9. Who said we were unprepared?

In all honesty there was a point when I was trying to wake up, my contacts were crusted to my eyelids, my feet hurt, and I could not get away from some stink that turned out to be me that I thought, "Why the HELL are we doing this?"  Then I saw Andy smiling when he crossed the line and dropped the bracelet when he handed it to Blake and Chach called us the American 400 relay team as everyone laughed that I remembered... Cause it is fun. (Now if somebody will tell Blake that when he runs by...)

Sleep tight, Sedentary Observers. Run on, Beer Run.

We are tired

Adrienne is running. 4 down, 2 to go. Go Team Beer Run!

Subway

That's where we ate. We're too exhausted to type anything funny.

FYI

It is POURING right now. Weaver is hating this run about now.

One leg down...

Two to go. After 12 hours of waiting, I finally got to run!

Had a nice run down the side of a highway. Regretted that the only food I had eaten since my bob evans biscuits and gravy was a bunch of cookies and pretzels. Oh well. The pain was worth it for the pbr I was rewarded with at the exchange point. Mmmmm!

We just had a nice dinner at subway and are now driving through a monsoon to the next exchange point. Sorry van#1. Must suck to be running in this rain.

Can't wait to get to the next stop for a few hours of sleep.

Leg 1: 0 ; Drake: 1

That's right. Finished my first leg. 7.3 miles in the dark on the C and O canal path. Dark and lonely, but IPOD was there to keep me company. It is strange how this is a team event but when you are out there in the middle of nowhere, by your self, it is a bit freaky. Thank goodness for lamps and vests and blinking red lights. Chach is running now and when he finishes all of team beer run will have finished leg one. Only two more to go. It is going to be a long night. Van 1, we are on our way.

Beer and Ribs...

Stopped to refuel while Van #2 carries on...
Andy cleaned the whole plate...

IMG00005.jpg

Van #1 pic...

Its really freaking dark...

Van 1 is sitting in the van, surrounded by total darkness. It is really dark. We will be running surrounded by black all around. I am a little scared. ;)

Really though we were trying to nap after our large, meaty dinner when the clan next to us with the boa decided it was a good idea to get on the roof of their van, only to get stuck and end up sliding down the front window. We are pretty sure boa lady at least was drunk. It also was not conducive to sleeping so we moved the van down the road a bit. As yuou can draw, not a whole lot has been going on at exchange 12.

I will mention (reiterate) that it is really dark, and cold, and we are just about to run for six hours in the middle of the night. And it is really dark.

Van #1 out.

Things are getting dicey

Some friendly locals pointed us to this sign when they heard we were
running all night. I'm sure it's just something they do to scare
visitors.

On that note, Mary should have been here by now...

Beware of nipple chafing

Ryan had a "too sexy for his shirt" moment on his first leg. At first,
we were impressed, but then he told us he was just trying to keep his
nipples from bleeding.

Then we laughed.

Fed and rested

Van #1 is nourished and ready for a nap! We feasted on ribs, steak and cheeseburgers and are picking up beer (Team Beer Run remember?) then off to Exchange #12 to wait for van #2.

I want to note how sore all joints in my body are. Icy hot is my friend right now.

The rest of the van is mostly just focused on sleep right now.

More later...

lmh

Don't count me out yet!

Blake here. Just letting everyone know that I am in fact alive. Even
passed a guy that had a huge head start on me! Gotta go though. Sarah
is amputating my other leg.

Van #1

This is currently the view from Van #1...hopefully the pic shows up...

We're scavenging for vittles and someplace dry for a while...

Van #2 needs to suck it up and run on...this is just the beginning....

The Death of Blake

Dear Faithful Readers -

It is with great sorrow that we report that we do not expect Blake to finish the Mountain of Death.  The poor guy has no idea what is ahead of him.

With that knowledge, we are putting out an All Points Bulletin for another volunteer to finish his last two legs. Please let us know if you are available by leaving a comment.

Sincerely,
Beer Run

Cornhole

The wire services are a little late reporting the cornhole results with the relay race getting all the attention, but in a last minute shocker...

"Ready to Run"

K Mix checking in.  Good people and good times - making this an amazing experience!  The scenery is gorgeous and fingers crossed the weather gods have been on our side. Van 2 is in good spirts and just ready to get their "run on!". We've posted our blog site on the van and getting fantastic  response. Its so motivating to watch folks running into the exchange. Can't wait to see Papa Pate rolling into Exch 6. Run On!!!

Van #1...

Just passed the burned out Red Rooster Hostel...

And, the Robert C. Byrd Industrial Park...

Rest assured...we quickly crossed back into Maryland...

Leg #2...

Weather is cool and misty...
And...it was AEwESOME to see Van #1 along the way...
Heck before I knew it I was the exchange point...

We're now at Exchange 4 waiting on Andriene to pass to Hugh...

So far....so good...

First Runner

Here in the pastoral setting that we affectionately know as Exchange #6, we just witnessed the first arrival of this race. The baton was passed without ceremony except for a smattering of applause.

Kelly got more cheers when she scored her first cornhole, but excitement is definitely building in Van 2...

Van decorating

Head decorator Kelly displays her work

8.7 miles- Leg #1 complete!

So I kicked off Team Beer Run this morning with leg #1. We got to the start line in Cumberland, MD, the rain had stopped and the atmosphere was great. I get to the start line with everyone cheering us on. Note that this is my longest leg so I'm all excited to get my 6.2 miles done first off. So I say hello to the guy next to me and he enthusiastically says how he's so ready to run 8.7 miles!!! Imagine my amazement (shock really) that I was now running 8.7 miles! I didn't run that far once while I was training! I am proud to say though that I ran the entire leg no stopping. Granted I am now icing my hips, knees, ankles and soles of my feet but I finished it! :)

So on our way to meet James at his halfway point to cheer him on at Leg #2 we entered a dark, wooded area (definitely a scene from deliverance) where we came upon a sign spray painted in red that read "Get out. If you do not own property back here you do not belong here". Being a solid team we drove on, only to moments later decide we would probably get shot if we continued. We love our team but wanted everyone to make it out alive.

Now onto excahge three where Adrienne will take off on leg #4. Van #1 is almost done with their first legs!

Somewhere in rural Maryland

After a quick pitstop at Cumberland's super Wal-Mart (super being an inadequate superlative) Van 2 has arrived at exchange 6 - the first exchange where we will meet up with Van 1. We anticipate being here for a few hours so we're setting up shop: redecorating the vans, playing some cornhole and being more awesome than all the other teams.  Blake and Ryan just got back from trip to a local convenience store. A six pack of Miller Lite came back with them. What do you mean this is a running race?

Exchange 6

Just arrived at the first major exchange. Now to wait for van 1.
Currently in the outhouse. Air freshener is good but not great.

Noreaster?

The Weather Channel said that we'd get smacked with a powerful storm.  Puh-leeze! This ain't rain...this is just a mist. Run on, Beer Run!

Runner 2

Just started. Major props to Jimmy James for picking up the cell phone in the middle of his run!!!!!!!!!
Why is van 1 not blogging??????
Side note: Bob Evans may have been a bad idea. We shall see!
SHD

Eat your heart out van 1!

Enjoy your granola bars! By the way... Waitresses up here are
waaaaay friendlier than the ones inside the beltway.

Excuse Me...

But I gotta testify!  Go Oregon State! First win over a #1 team since 1967!

Yes Georgia, Florida, Oklahoma, and Missouri fans, Christmas came early this year!

Go BEAVERS (and Beer Run)!!!

Bob Evans

Van 2 already made our first pit stop for breakfast. God Bless Bob Evans. Lisa is running now. We are with you in spirit.

Cumberland culture

The race is in progress! We expect Lisa to be done with her 10k in
about 30 minutes total. If she isn't... Well every relay has
casualties. Our rivals seem like a motley crew of the elderly, high
school burnouts, and cross dressers. We don't expect much competition.

I took this picture of the local economy. I can respect any town that
has liquor stores open at 8 am.

Ps. I have no idea if this picture will post.

It's raining....

....But we don't care. A beautiful grey morning in cumberland, md.

We're checking in. T minus 35 minutes to our first runner's start.

And everyone will be happy to know that Kelly survived the unidentified stains in the super 8 motel bed, is refreshed and ready to go.

The adventure begins...

We're enroute to the starting line. Up here in God's country, the air
is fresh, the trees are green, and the weather SUCKS! We're not too
worried though. We've been training for years for this moment! Good
luck to our first runner, Lisa!

Traversing the Maryland wilderness

Captain Chach has performed admirably in steering our enourmous van
towards Cumberland so far. The natives seem friendly and rumors of
cannibalistic tribes have proved unfounded at this point. However,
the comforts of civilization already seem so far behind. Crew morale
remains high as we sing pop country hits to pass the time.

On that note, I hate country music.

Blake out.

Are we there yet?

(I have a feeling we are going to be hearing that a lot between now and Saturday.)  Did we mention Andy ate three bowls of pasta at the OG?  Who knew Poppa Pate was also a professional eater?!?!?
SHD

Destination No-tell, Motel 8, Cumberland, MD

We have now had dinner and are on our way to the hotels in Cumberland, MD (map it, far away in Maryland). After much a carb-loading (endless pasta at Olive Garden) we are ready to start off Team Beer Run with a bang tomorrow morning. The downside is that it is pouring rain, as it has been pretty much since we left tonight. We in Van #1 are all pretty sure we will be running in squishy wet shoes all day tomorrow......

That's all for now- Van #1 over and out.....

lmh

Dinner was a success...Olive Garden keeps a lot of carbs on hand, fortunately.

James ate so much he almost puked...no lie.

Olive Garden. Van1 is way behind. A sign of what's to come?
